The Psychological Risks of ADHD Un-diagnosis

ADHDifference Podcast: ADHD Undiagnoses, Comorbidities, & High Achievers

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Julie Legg on the ADHDifference podcast to talk about a topic very close to my heart: the intersection of ADHD, Bipolar disorder, and the “high-achiever” trap.

We dove deep into the reality of what it’s like to navigate the world when you’re internally struggling but externally “successful.” For a long time, my ability to get things done meant that my neurodivergence was overlooked because my loved ones “un-diagnosed’ me since I don’t share the typical presentation of ADHD—a story I know many of you share.

What we discussed:

  • The “High-Functioning” Myth: Why being labeled “high-functioning” can actually be a barrier to getting the support we deserve.
  • Managing Comorbidities: My personal journey navigating both ADHD and Bipolar disorder and finding clinicians who see the whole picture.
  • The Imposter Syndrome of Late Diagnosis: Shifting the internal dialogue from “What is wrong with me?” to “How does my brain actually work?”
  • Recovery & Regulation: Why I advocate for social media detoxes and finding “focus recovery” strategies that actually work for a neurodivergent nervous system.
  • Humor as a Tool: We also talked about my upcoming book, Same Shiite, Different Day, and why curiosity and laughter can be quite helpful when dealing with mental health.

It was such an honest, raw conversation, and I hope it helps you feel a little more seen in your own journey.
